Homemade Guacomole

I can’t tell you how to grow an avocado tree and not share how to make guacamole!  Funny thing is how your taste changes over time. I never liked avocados until later in life! And now I live for a good guacamole!!! If you really want to go out of the ordinary try guacomole with plain pork rinds instead of chips!

Guacamole is a delicious and popular Mexican dip made primarily from ripe avocados. Here’s a simple recipe for making guacamole:

Ingredients:

  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1 small red onion, finely diced
  • 1-2 small tomatoes, diced
  • 1-2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1-2 jalapeño or serrano peppers, seeded and finely chopped (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Avocados:

    • Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop out the flesh into a mixing bowl.
  2. Mash the Avocado:

    • Use a fork or potato masher to mash the avocado to your desired level of chunkiness. Some people like it smooth, while others prefer it slightly chunky.
  3. Add Lime Juice:

    • Squeeze the juice of one lime over the mashed avocados. The lime juice not only adds flavor but also helps prevent the avocados from browning.
  4. Add Chopped Vegetables:

    • Add the finely diced red onion, diced tomatoes, minced garlic, and chopped jalapeño or serrano peppers to the bowl with the mashed avocados. You can adjust the amount of pepper to control the spiciness of your guacamole.
  5. Add Cilantro:

    • Stir in the chopped cilantro, which adds a fresh, herbaceous flavor to the guacamole.
  6. Season with Salt and Pepper:

    • Season the guacamole with salt and pepper to taste. Start with a pinch of salt and add more if needed. Freshly ground black pepper is a nice addition as well.
  7. Mix and Taste:

    • Gently mix all the ingredients together until well combined. Taste the guacamole and adjust the seasoning as necessary. You can add more lime juice, salt, or other seasonings to suit your taste.
  8. Serve:

    • Guacamole is best served immediately, as it can start to brown over time. If you need to store it for a short period, press plastic wrap directly against the surface of the guacamole to minimize exposure to air, which causes browning.
  9. Enjoy:

    • Serve your homemade guacamole with tortilla chips, as a topping for tacos, nachos, or alongside your favorite Mexican dishes.

Guacamole is a versatile and delicious dip that you can customize to your taste. Feel free to experiment with additional ingredients like diced bell peppers, corn, or other spices to make it your own signature recipe.
